Veterinary medicine is a very tough and challenging profession and so is the undergraduate study. Vet students in MOUAU(Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike),devote their time fully in their studies which are in 3 phases:
Pre-clinicals, para-clinicals and clinics.
The fear of Marriage is viewed from two perspectives:
(1) LECTURERS
Vet. Lecturers feel that the courses to be undertaken in each class of Vet studies needs absolute concentration. They complain that students are easily distracted if married. In fact, some lecturers will shy away from helping students whose priority is marriage while in school. Married students tend to fail more than single students because they are distracted from their studies as a result of their marital obligations. Vet. Lecturers do not approve of marriage as an undergraduate, they advice that students especially female students should exercise patience, complete their first degree program before considering marriage.
(2) STUDENTS
Marriage is a special commitment between two persons. Vet students are known as "book worms". Some even fail their exams despite the commitments and efforts they put in their studies. 98% of them see marriage as a distraction and HIGH WAY to repeat classes. Vet curriculum is totally different from those in other colleges as they do not reference courses(carry over). If you fail your resit exams, you may be required to step down accordingly. More so, the academic calendar of Vet medicine is one full year while other colleges do run a 7-8months academic calendar in a session. Even during the holidays, vet students register for internship programs in various designated clinics and agricultural centers which commences from 200level through 600level in between semesters.
Some students said: There's no space, not enough time, we can't combine marriage and studies together, we are even struggling as single students, who knows what will happen if one is married.
There's NO LAW PROHIBITING MARRIAGE as a vet student, but it's clearly AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Fresh students out there should take note😊

ReplyDeleteThank you
DeleteYeah......it was seen as a stigma in those days. But I bet hat recently it's more common, with marriages between students and lecturers, etc.
ReplyDeleteIts either the curicullum has been revised, or the female vet students have gotten smarter!
People are becoming wise. Thanks for your input.
DeleteYou're welcomed
ReplyDeleteBut why is that? Doc ans
ReplyDeleteMarriage isn't a child's play, it's not a boyfriend relationship. You must be committed fully to make it worthwhile not half baked, same is applicable as a Veterinary student. I will advice you to choose one first according to your priority. Ask your Senior colleagues or watch closely those that are married/not married,.. There's a sharp difference in their academic performance.
