How to calculate your GP in the Nigerian Universities

If you're reading these, it means that you're stuck in the middle of your GP calculation, or you're wondering how they calculate it. If so, you're in the appropriate place. I would say welcome, 🤗,  let's move!!!

Follow this example carefully.

First GP means, Grade Point. In the Nigerian University, it's graded as 5 example(2.5/5 or 3.0/5 or 4.5/5). Polytechnics grade as 4. GP is each of your semester's grade while both first and second semester grades added together is calculated as Cumulative and divided by the average. This is why the annual result (first and second semester is called Cumulative grade point average. CGPA) while each of the semester result is called Grade points( GP)

Let's be practical in this tutorial, kindly get a paper and Biro, follow the examples carefully. Study it and solve your mathematics 😚.

Let's say you're in ABSU or EBSU or UNN or MOUAU or UNILAG or ESUTH or.....(Nigerian universities)
You are in a department etc.. Let's say Biochemistry or Civil Engineering or Optometry or..
Let's say that your department gave outline for course registration and the total course is 20 credit unit which are as follows: GSS 111(3 unit), GSS 112(3 unit), GSS 113(3 unit), ENG 111(3 unit), MTH 111(2 unit), ENG112(2 unit), PHY111(2 unit), CHM 111(2 unit). Totalling 20 credit unit.
Now, let's see the marks and scoring:
To make A=5,B=4,C=3,D=2,E=1,F=0.

Having A in all means that if calculated by the credit load you will get: (3*5)+(3*5)+(3*5)+(3*5)+(2*5)+(2*5)+(2*5)+(2*5)=15+15+15+15+10+10+10+10
A total of 100 scoring. Let's divide 100 by the total no of credit load which is 20: 100/20 =5(that's how you get 5 points). Now let's use this method to add and divide yours.
From above Your results are as follows:

Let's say in your courses in first semester you made 2As, 3Bs, 2Cs and 1F as follows: GSS 111(3 unit=A), GSS 112(3 unit=A), GSS 113(3 unit=B), ENG 111(3 unit=B), MTH 111(2 unit=B), ENG112(2 unit=C), PHY111(2 unit=C), CHM 111(2 unit=F).
To calculate.
The score X the credit load;. That means
GSS 111(3 unit=A), A is 5 hence 5*3= 15

GSS 112(3 unit=A),
A is 5 hence 5*3= 15

GSS 113(3 unit=B), B is 4 hence 4X3 =12 ENG 111(3 unit=B),
B is 4 hence 4X3 =12

MTH 111(2 unit=B),
B is 4 hence 4X2 =8

ENG112(2 unit=C), C is 3 hence 3X2=6

PHY111(2 unit=C),
C is 3 hence 3X2=6

CHM 111(2 unit=F).F is 0 hence 2X0= 0

So, let's calculate,
15+15+12+12+8+6+6+0=74
Now let's divide 74 by the total credit load which is 20
Therefore 74/20 =3.7
Hence your GPA is 3.7
Which is a comfortable second class upper for the semester 😚. Use this method to calculate yours. I had to simplify it to make it easy.

  1. I am currently in 200level first semester and had 6 carryovers in 100level. Three in the first semester, three in the second semester.. Had to drop six courses to make way for the carryover courses this present semester.. My question is, would I have to write those dropped courses in my 300level or it doesn't matter anymore?

    1. It means you're dropping 3 courses each in each of the semesters of your current 200 Level. Kindly note that You must Write the dropped courses before you graduate because they're a pre requisite to getting your degree. No dropped course must be ignored, if you do, 100% you won't graduate. Kindly change Your study pattern, interact more with brilliant course mates, change your friends, in order to avoid another CO, also you may likely prepare your mind to return for an Extra year(spill over) after your finals. Do have a wonderful day

    1. If I understood correctly, you had 2 carry-over...in your first semester 100 level and made 2.75GP, second semester was 3.90. your 100 level CGPA was 3.27. In 200 level first semester you passed the two CO with C and B. I would say, congratulations my dear. Please concentrate on your studies. Do not bother adding it for now. They've been added already as 0 in your GP by your college underwriters when your failed them. Your new results (After passing the CO), had been sent to the University's academic record reconciliators, that's why, when you're finally done with all academic scores, they will sit and thoroughly screen your results and reconcile your old scores(the one you failed with your new scores (the scores you got in your Re-written CO), example, if you scored 30 in Maths which is F during your semester exam and you later scored 67 which is B after re writing it once, in result reconciliation, they will divide the B by 2(4/2=2), this means it's finally a D. hence they will replace the F(30)= 0 with a D=2, they will do same thing in all your previously CO results depending on the Credit units and no of times you wrote each carry-over. After refilling, the entire results will be recalculated from first year to final year...to get your degree result. So your C and B are D and D. But will only reflect in your degree result. Congratulations once again. Try harder to enter 4 points in your CGPA before your finals., It's absolutely possible. It gives me joy when students correct their academic errors and work harder for better scores and value. Do have a lovely day.

  3. Ma, please I’m in my final year (400 level) and I have two carry over from my previous year (300 level) One of The carry over is a compulsory course and if I don’t pass it I can’t graduate with my mates, I really hope it does not lead to an extra year, I’m really scared and troubled. Please I really need your advice ma

    1. Having an extra year isn't really a problem, it's your class of degree that matter. Study hard to pass the courses.

    1. Only The course(s) you failed. You may be required to borrow irrelevant courses to fill up your course form(courses that do not really matter). However, you will pay full tuition fee(school fees)

    1. Hello dear, In my honest opinion, it is possible! However, very difficult. If you're in your penultimate year, it means that you're likely going for your IT after your first semester. If you can work hard and focus, defend your IT perfectly, score an A in your total SIWES package, that's 5.00GP. If you can sustain a GP of 4.0 in your first semester 300 level and 4.50 in first semester final year, your CGPA will rise to 3.24. If you maintain a GP minimum of 4.0 in second semester final year, your college CGPA will rise to 3.75, if you pass all your Carry over at first attempt, then your final degree result after reconciliation may shrink to exactly 3.51(2nd class upper). However, you may likely return for an extra Year(you will pay school fees) but who cares, the most important is your graduation result. It's better to have 2:1 and graduate after your mates than graduating early with 3rd class. Good luck. It's difficult but possible. Work hard and be smart

  8. Good morning ma. My cgpa after 300l first semester is 1.64, still waiting for my IT defense. I have 2 co and like 3 courses that was dropped due to co I got in 200l, apparently an extra year is unavoidable, and I don’t mind. But the question is, is it still possible to graduate with a 2nd class lower?

    1. Yes,it's possible. Your IT result will affect or help your Final result. If you can score a minimum of B, you're favored. If A, that's 5.0 which will boost your CGPA, then work hard in your Final Year.

  9. Good morning ma’am, please I need your help because I’m confused. I’m currently in 400 level studying Economics.

In my first year (100 level), I studied a different course in both semesters (Yr 1, I studied mass communication).

Then in my Year 2 (200 level) I transferred to Economics. That is 200 level, 300 level and 400 level I studied Economics.

Because I transferred to a different school (from School of Communication(Mass Comm) to School of Management and Social Sciences (Economics), my transcript start from 200 level.
(That is, it contains my gpa of Yr 2, Yr 3 & Yr 4 first semester)

    My question is
Why is my CGPA starting from Year 1 (100 level) when my transcript starts from Year 2 (200 level)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When you applied for your transcript, did you indicate that you transfered from another college?, It's important because they will need to get your file from year one and merge it to compute for your transcript. So that you will have your first year through final year. If not , it's seen as a direct entry result.

  11. Please, if a student have an extra year with courses that can be cleared in the first semester, will the school give him his certificate after the first semester (extra year) exams result, provided he passed, or he has to wait till the session is completed before getting his certificate?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You don't need to wait. Once you're cleared of your first semester for as long as the carryovers didn't extend to second semester, you will proceed with your clearance, get your certificate and join the next batch of NYSC, the only question is: How smart and proactive are you, how proactive are your college officer and your HOD/Dean. Always remind them, infact, disturb them to hasten your results and submit to academic affairs.

    1. Don't worry about that, the academic affairs will work it out, for as long as they're aware that you're direct entry and they have the necessary results

    1. We have Bio 101 or 111(first semester) and Bio 121(2nd semester). That's how it works. In your second semester you will attend Bio 121 classes. Now: In your 200 level first semester, you will fill in the Bio 101 in your course form as a carryover. Make Sure to rewrite it in 200 level, if the credit unit is large(3 or 4), then you will have to drop a course. Please, go and meet your college officer, so he will direct you properly.
